What are asavas and Arishtas?

Arishtas and asavas are self-generated herbal fermentations of traditional Ayurvedic system. They are alcoholic medicaments prepared by allowing the herbal juices or their decoctions to undergo fermentation with the addition of sugars.

The main difference between Asava and Arishta is involvement of the heat. Generally, Asava formulations are prepared without making decoctions and Arishta formulations are prepared making decoctions. However, it is not a universal principle and there are a few exceptions.
