What is metathalamus?

The metathalamus is a region of the thalamencephalon formed by the medial and lateral geniculate bodies bilaterally. It serves as an important relay nucleus in both the auditory and visual pathways.

Which one is located in the metathalamus part of diencephalon?

It is the caudal part of the forebrain (prosencephalon) that occupies the central region of the brain. The diencephalon is comprised of the: Epithalamus….Diencephalon.

Is metathalamus part of thalamus?

Anatomical Parts The metathalamus is a composite structure of the thalamus, consisting of the medial geniculate nucleus and the lateral geniculate nucleus.

What are thalami?

What is the thalamus? Your thalamus is an egg-shaped structure in the middle of your brain. It’s known as a relay station of all incoming motor (movement) and sensory information — hearing, taste, sight and touch (but not smell) — from your body to your brain.

Where is metathalamus located?

Description. The metathalamus comprises the geniculate bodies which originate as slight outward bulgings of the alar lamina. In the adult the lateral geniculate body appears as an eminence on the lateral part of the posterior end of the thalamus, while the medial is situated on the lateral aspect of the mid-brain.

What is the metathalamus composed of?

The metathalamus is composed of the medial and lateral geniculate bodies, or nuclei. Fibres of the optic nerve end in the lateral geniculate body, which consists of six cellular laminae, or layers, folded into a horseshoe configuration.

Which structures does the telencephalon include?

The telencephalon has four major components: the cerebral cortex, the limbic forebrain structures, the basal ganglia, and the olfactory system. The diencephalon consists of two major structures: the thalamus and hypothalamus and two smaller structures, the epithalamus and subthalamus.

What are the parts of the telencephalon?

What lobes are in the telencephalon?

There are four lobes in the telencephalon. They are the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe. Each lobe is found on both hemispheres of the brain.

Where is the epithalamus located?

The epithalamus is the most distal part of the diencephalon, forming the roof of the third ventricle. The pineal gland extends from its posterior border, being externally visible. The caudal border of the epithalamus forms from the posterior commissure.

What are the structures of epithalamus?

Components. The epithalamus is a tiny structure that comprises the habenular trigone, the pineal gland, and the habenular commissure. It is wired with the limbic system and basal ganglia. Species that possess a photoreceptive parapineal organ show asymmetry in the epithalamus at the habenula, to the left (dorsal).

Is the epithalamus the pineal gland?

The epithalamus is a small region of the diencephalon consisting of the pineal gland, habenular nuclei, and stria medullaris thalami. The pineal gland contains no true neurons, only glial cells.

Where is the telencephalon located?

The telencephalon is also known as the cerebrum, and it consists of the largest part of the brain (it makes up about 85% of the total weight of the brain).
