You will struggle to paint over Shades as it has a water repelling element that also repels susbsequent coats of paint or stain. In fact, if you leave it too long (only talking a few hours) you cannot even apply a second coat if that is needed. You’ll have to give the surface a ‘key’ to over-coat it. )
Can I use Cuprinol shades on bare wood?
It is suitable for use on planed or rough sawn bare wood, making it ideal for pergolas, gazebos, treillis, planters, sheds, summerhouses and garden furniture.

Apply. MINIMUM OF 2 COATS REQUIRED. SUBSEQUENT COATS MUST BE APPLIED ON THE SAME DAY NO LONGER THAN 8 HOURS APART. IF NOT POSSIBLE, LIGHTLY SAND DOWN SURFACES BEFORE RECOAT TO ENSURE ADHESION.
