What is the difference between 6SL7 and 6SN7?
The 6SL7 is a high gain low current amplifier and the 6SN7 is a rather low gain higher current tube. The 6SL7 can only handle 2.5 ma per triode and actually works best in the 0.5 to 0.7 ma range. The 6SN7 can handle 25 ma per triode and seems to work best in the 8-12 ma range.

Is 12sn7 a sub for 6SN7?

What do you think about 6SJ7 tubes?
They distort nicely when overdriven and if you want a little pentode chime thrown into the mix use a 6SJ7 (kind of like a octal EF36) Now for the bad news. Most of these tubes are microphonic and good NOS ones are hard to find. Some also tend to have a little hum to them and this can be fixed by running them off of a DC heater supply.
