Why do whale beach themselves?
The beaching of a single, live animal is usually the result of sickness or injury. Bad weather, old age, navigation errors, and hunting too close to shore also contribute to beachings. Some whale and dolphin species are more prone to mass beachings. Toothed whales (Odontoceti) are the most commonly affected.
Why do whales beach themselves in New Zealand?

What to do if you find a whale on the beach?

- DO NOT attempt to return the animal to sea.
- Keep people and dogs away from the animal.
- If the animal is in the surf, support it upright and keep water out of the blowhole at all times.
- Keep the animal cool and wet by splashing water on the skin.
How long can beached whale survive?
If they ever are on land, they can survive only a couple hours. If there is a way of cooling down the whale when it is on land, like pouring cold water onto it, it can survive for a couple hours longer. A lot of whale die when then are on land because they cannot support their own weight when out of the water.
Can you save a beached whale?
The good news is that some of these whales do survive. If you spot a beached whale, call the local authorities immediately. Do not attempt to approach the whale on your own—you never know when that powerful tail will decide to thrash, or if they might carry diseases. Let the trained professionals lead the rescue.
Does sonar cause whale beaching?

Does throwing water on a beached whale help?

What do they do with dead whales on the beach?
Such very large carcasses are difficult to move. The whales are often towed back out to sea away from shipping lanes, allowing them to decompose naturally, or they are towed out to sea and blown up with explosives.
Why do you never approach a dead orca?
