I called Trenitalia and spoke with a representative. You CANNOT book tickets through the website from US. It is only for Italy customers. They will NOT accept US credit cards. You have three choices, go through their site, and there are a list of vendors you can use.
Does Trenitalia still work?
It is really too bad because for several years Trenitalia worked, but not very well, and only on Explorer, but if you were lucky you could actually choose your seats by clicking on the icons. Now they have eliminated that, but it doesn’t matter because you can’t use their site anyway.

Of course, Trenitalia’s site requires you to rebuild your cart again, but such is life.
