What is a laterally loaded pile?

Lateral deformation of piles involves large strains in the soil near the ground surface. The lateral deflection of a laterally loaded pile at relatively low load level will increase approximately linearly with applied loads. However the overall load deflection behaviour is distinctively non – linear.
