Haleakala has an average grade of 5% and is 98% downhill. There are many switchbacks on the first portion of the Maui volcano bike ride that eliminate any excessive steepness. Without stopping, the bike tour takes about 1 ½ hours to return to sea level and typically return between 11:45am – 12pm and have lunch in Paia.

The first part is a bus tour up Haleakala where you get to walk around the crater and take photos. The second part is the bike trip down Haleakala. We considered some tours that just did the second part, but I was really glad we did the first part because it was cool to see the crater. We took some really great photos.
