What is GVHD of the lungs?

Chronic GVHD of the lungs happens when the donor’s cells attack the small airways (tubes) in your lungs. This can make your lungs inflamed (red and swollen) and cause scarring.

Does graft vs host disease disappear?

GVHD usually goes away a year or so after the transplant, when your body starts to make its own white blood cells from the donor cells. But some people have to manage it for many years.

Is GvHD a good thing?

Some GvHD can be a good thing because it means that your new immune system is working and is likely to be attacking any remaining or returning disease. This can be referred to as ‘graft versus leukaemia effect’ or ‘graft versus tumour effect’. However, too much GvHD can cause unwanted complications and side effects.

Does a bone marrow transplant shorten your life?

Overall, the life expectancy of patients who underwent BMT was 20.8% lower than expected, translating into 8.7 years of life lost, reported Smita Bhatia, MD, MPH, of the Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and colleagues.

What is life expectancy after stem cell transplant?

The relative mortality rate was high early after transplant as expected (standardized mortality ratio [SMR], 34.3 in the first 2-5 years) but persisted beyond 30 years (SMR, 5.4). Factors estimating mortality included age, high-risk disease, chronic GVHD, and use of PBSC grafts.

Can GVHD be cured?

Treatment for chronic GvHD usually includes steroids. You might also have ciclosporin (which is known as Deximune, Neoral or Sandimmum) to reduce your immune response. If these drugs don’t control the GvHD, your doctor might suggest other treatments to damp down your immune system.
