Why does my gas fireplace keep turning on and off?

One of the main reasons why your gas fireplace keeps shutting down is likely due to the pilot light. This is an integral part of a gas fireplace, that kick starts the gas fire. When you turn on the fire, the pilot light button needs to be held in so that it can light the fire.

Why do my fireplace keep cutting off?

Clogged or Dirty Burner Ports The locations where the flames come out of a fireplace are all called burner ports. If any of these are clogged or dirty, they can cause the flame to go out, which will also cause your fireplace to shut off.

Why does my gas fireplace turn off after a few minutes?

If you get dust in the pilot assembly and the pilot needs to be cleaned out, it produces a “lazy” flame, which will be disturbed by the draught of the main burners. The flame lifts away from the thermocouple and causes the temperature on the tip of the thermocouple to drop. This, in turn, makes the gas valve shut off.

Why is my gas fireplace flickering?

Flame flickers or spits – A draft in the room can cause your flame to flicker. Spitting is often caused by a dirty gas orifice or tube. These can be cleaned with a stiff wire, but you’ll need to remove the pilot light assembly to do so.

Do gas fireplaces turn off when too hot?

Most new gas fireplaces have a safety shut-off valve if the pilot light goes out. So if you have a new gas fireplace, the chances are that it has this feature.

Why does my pilot light keep flickering?

Why did my fireplace turn on by itself?

The most likely cause of this problem is that wiring is burned or shorted out. Two low voltage wires extend from the remote control receiver to the gas valve, and perhaps from a separate toggle switch to the gas valve.

Does a gas fireplace need to be cleaned?

While gas fireplaces don’t produce creosote, they do still need annual cleaning. Both propane and natural gas are clean burning gas fuels, so they don’t produce the same byproducts as wood, but they can still produce buildup that needs to be cleaned away.

Can gas fireplaces turn on by themselves?

Some gas fireplaces with electric start have a thermopile that generates enough electricity to keep the valve open, even if you disconnect the mains electricity. So if the fireplace was on already and you disconnect the main power, I would expect the fire to stay on. However, starting by itself is not a good thing.
