What is stauffers syndrome?

Nonmetastatic nephrogenic hepatic dysfunction syndrome without jaundice (Stauffer’s syndrome) is a paraneoplastic manifestation that often appears as the initial clinical presentation of renal cell carcinoma and other malignancies, including bronchogenic carcinoma, leiomyosarcoma, and prostate adenocarcinoma.

Which human organ is linked to Stauffer syndrome?

Non-metastatic hepatic dysfunction in patients suffering from renal cell carcinoma is known as Stauffer’s syndrome. It is associated with the production of cytokines by the tumour, and several biochemical abnormalities, including elevated serum alkaline phosphatase.

What causes Stauffer syndrome?

Stauffer syndrome is a constellation of signs and symptoms of liver dysfunction that arises due to presence of renal cell carcinoma, and, more rarely, in connection with other malignant neoplasms, though the specific pathogenesis is currently unknown.

What is the paraneoplastic syndrome that is common in patients with renal cell carcinoma?

Hypercalcemia is the most common of the paraneoplastic syndromes in patients with RCC and of those with hypercalcemia and RCC, approximately 75% have high-stage lesions.

What is cytoreductive nephrectomy?

Cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) is defined as the surgical removal of the primary RCC lesion before initiation of systemic therapy. CN has been a mainstay of therapy for decades.

How does liver affect breathing?

The hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a rare lung complication of liver disease. When the liver is not functioning properly, blood vessels in the lungs may dilate. If this is severe enough, the lungs can lose their ability to effectively transfer oxygen to the body.

Is cholestasis life threatening?

Cholestasis is a life-threatening condition that can cause severe pregnancy complications like stillbirth. Unfortunately, stillbirths due to cholestasis cannot be prevented even with constant monitoring of the baby via ultrasound or with the help of medications.

Is cholestasis reversible?

Although the prognosis of drug-induced cholestasis is generally good with reversibility of symptoms, a chronic cholestatic lesion resembling primary biliary cirrhosis may ensue.

What does debulking mean in surgery?

(dee-BUL-king) Surgical removal of as much of a tumor as possible. Debulking may increase the chance that chemotherapy or radiation therapy will kill all the tumor cells. It may also be done to relieve symptoms or help the patient live longer. Also called tumor debulking.

Does renal cell carcinoma spread fast?

RCC is a fast-growing cancer and often spreads to the lungs and surrounding organs.

What is life expectancy with paraneoplastic syndrome?

Paraneoplastic endocrine syndromes HHM is usually found in individuals with a significant tumor burden [1]. The median survival time (MST) of 59 patients with hypercalcemia was 3.8 months, which was significantly shorter than that of patients without hypercalcemia (9.5 months, p<0.001) [2].

Can you recover from paraneoplastic syndrome?

There are no cures for paraneoplastic syndromes. There are no available treatments to stop progressive neurological damage. Generally, the stage of cancer at diagnosis determines the outcome.
