What is Star & delta connection?
A Star Connection is a 4 – wire connection (4th wire is optional in some cases) A Delta Connection is a 3 – wire connection. Two types of Star Connection systems are possible: 4 – wire 3 – phase system and 3 – wire 3 phase system. In Delta Connection, only 3 – wire 3 phase system is possible.
How does a star delta circuit work?
In star delta starting an induction motor is connected in through a star connection throughout the starting period. Then once the motor reaches the required speed, the motor is connected in through a delta connection. A star delta starter will start a motor with a star connected stator winding.
What is the difference between star and delta circuit?
In STAR Connection, the starting or finishing ends (similar ends) of three coils are connected together to form the neutral point. A common wire is taken out from the neutral point which is called Neutral. In DELTA Connection, the opposite ends of three coils are connected together.
Why Star Delta is used?
Star/Delta starters are probably the most common reduced voltage starters. They are used in an attempt to reduce the start current applied to the motor during start as a means of reducing the disturbances and interference on the electrical supply.
Where is Star Delta Connection used?
The star-delta connection is mainly used in step-down transformers, which are located at the substation end of the transmission line.
Why small motors are star connected?
The star connection is usually used in HT motors, those motors are used where low initial torque is required. Since the torque is equal to the square of the voltage, so the star connection is used because in a star connection the voltage across each winding is small.
What is LT motor and HT motor?
LT motors called low tension motor and HT motor called high tension motor. As per Indian practice motor are classied as follows. LT Motor – Motors which work on 230 V, 415 V and 690 V. HT Motor – Motors which work on 3.3 KV, 6.6 KV and 11 KV.
Why the neutral point is zero in star connection?
If the voltage of a star-connected alternator is applied across a balanced load, the neutral wire will carry three load currents which are exactly equal in magnitude but 120o out of phase with each other. Hence, their vector sum is zero. i.e. IR + IB + IY = 0, or IN = 0.
Why HV side is star connected?
The primary side is star connected. Hence fewer numbers of turns are required. This makes the connection economical for large high voltage step down power transformers. The neutral available on the primary can be earthed to avoid distortion.
Are transformers Star or Delta?
Transformer Winding Identification
| Connection | Primary Winding | Secondary Winding |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | D | d |
| Star | Y | y |
| Interconnected | Z | z |
