What is the NuvaRing schedule?
NuvaRing is used in a 4-week cycle. Keep NuvaRing in your vagina for 3 weeks (21 days) and then remove it for a 1-week (7-day) break. Regularly check that NuvaRing is in your vagina (for example, before and after intercourse) to ensure that you are protected from pregnancy.
Can you leave NuvaRing in for 4 weeks?
The manufacturer states NuvaRing is still an effective hormonal contraception if inserted for 4 weeks (instead of the usual three weeks), but the manufacturer recommends removing it for a ring-free week before inserting a new ring for maximum contraceptive effectiveness.
Are you still protected on the 7 day break NuvaRing?
You’re protected against pregnancy during the ring-free break. After the 7-day break you then put a new ring in for another 21 days. You can also choose to have a shorter ring-free break or not to have a break at all. This is as safe and effective as the standard use.
What happens if you don’t put your NuvaRing in on time?
If you put it back in within 48 hours, you’ll still be protected from pregnancy. If the ring has been out of your vagina for more than 2 days (and you’re not on your ring-free week), wash the ring in cool water and put it back in right away.
How do I change my NuvaRing schedule?
You can do this 2 ways:
- Pick a date and always change your ring on that date. So if you put your first ring in on the 15th of the month, you always change your ring on the 15th of every month.
- Wear the ring for 3 weeks (21 days), 4 weeks (28 days), or 5 weeks (35 days). Then take out your old ring and put in a new ring.
Can I skip period on NuvaRing?
In order to skip your period with the NuvaRing, you will need to pick up your NuvaRing prescription at least a week early from the pharmacy. This is necessary because you will need to insert a new NuvaRing during week 4, which is a week earlier than normal.

If the expelled NuvaRing has been out of your vagina for more than 3 continuous hours: During Weeks 1 and 2, you may not be protected from pregnancy. Reinsert the ring as soon as you remember. Use another birth control method, such as male condoms with spermicide, until the ring has been in place for 7 days in a row.
