Is Muscadet a sparkling wine?

Since most are probably not familiar with this grape, I thought I’d share a bit, in the hopes that you will seek out a bottle, and try some. Muscadet (also known as Melon de Bourgogne) is different from Muscat, which most people associate with grapey, lightly sparkling wine.

What kind of wine is Muscadet Sevre et Maine?

dry white wine
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie refers to a dry white wine from France’s Loire Valley, produced from the Melon de Bourgogne, grape, sometimes mistakenly referred to as the Muscadet grape.

Is all Muscadet Sur Lie?

Many Muscadet wines are produced Sur Lie, a French term that means “on the lees.” This is a maturation technique whereby the wine is kept in contact with its lees—dead yeast cells—after the process of alcoholic fermentation takes place. Extended contact with the lees can add texture and yeasty biscuit flavors.

Can you age Muscadet?

It is made from the melon de Bourgogne grape, and good Muscadet, surprisingly, can age beautifully, sometimes for decades.

Is Muscadet wine sweet or dry?

Muscadet is produced mainly in the Loire region and is a dry white wine. The difference is, Muscat Sec and other Muscat Varieties are from other regions across France and are sweet dessert wines.

Is Muscadet a nice wine?

Muscadet is loved as an excellent food pairing wine due to its minerally, citrus-like taste and high acidity. The appellation, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine, is the largest and most important region for high quality Muscadet.

How do you drink Muscadet?

As it is a white wine, it’s hardly surprising that Muscadet works very well when pairing with seafood. Mussels, oysters, scallops, and shrimp are popular foods to eat with the wine. Additionally, the wine works well when paired with salmon and chicken. In terms of vegetables, Muscadet is also fairly versatile.

How long can you keep Muscadet?

Most Muscadets should be drunk within three years of production. There are, however, some exceptions to this rule. Depending upon the soils upon which they are produced and vinification, some Muscadets can have an aging potential of up to and exceeding ten years.

Is Muscadet like Sauvignon Blanc?

In contrast to the strong personalities typical of Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc in the Loire Valley, Muscadet is subtle to the point of being neutral. This neutrality stems from a variety of factors, but one of the most significant is the reticent character of the grape variety itself.

When should I drink Muscadet wine?

How does Muscadet wine taste?

When tasting Muscadet, you can expect to taste notes of lemon, lime, tart apples, and an almost sea-like saline quality. The wine is extremely light and has barely any body at all. Conversely, it has an extremely high acidity and a total lack of sweetness. As the result, the wine is extremely crisp and refreshing.
