Lights on or off? Some puppies and dogs prefer a nightlight. They find it comforting. But for others, the light can provide too much stimulation and keep them awake and busy.

Is it OK to leave puppies in the dark?

All this said, it’s best not to leave your dog alone in the dark, especially not for extended periods of time. As discussed above, while they can see okay in low light, complete darkness is the same for them as it is for us – except that we can choose to turn the lights on when we need to move around, and they can’t!

Should I keep a light on for my dog at night?

One concern about leaving lights on is disrupting the dogs sleeping pattern. Wolves are the ancestors of the domesticated dog, which were of course nocturnal. This means that lights shouldn’t stop your dog from being able to sleep, but it might be an idea to consider leaving some of the house in darkness for them.

Should I leave the light off when my dog is?

Unless you have a dog that you have reason to believe is actually afraid of the dark, I don’t see why you would leave it on. For our dog, switching the light off is his signal as well that he can go to sleep now and won’t be disturbed until it’s time to get up. It helps everyone develop a routine.

What time should you put a puppy to bed?

Bedtime: A set bedtime makes his adjustment and house training easier for everyone. It doesn’t matter if it’s 8 p.m. or midnight, as long as it becomes a routine. Take him to his crate and help him settle down for the night.
