Cytogenetic response is based on the percentage of cells in a sample of your bone marrow that have the Philadelphia chromosome (and therefore are CML cells). This can be determined with either cytogenetics or FISH testing, both of which can find altered (mutated) chromosomes.

How are CML and Leukemoid reactions different?

Leukemoid reactions cause an increase in neutrophils, whereas CML increases granulocytes. These cells have similar but different functions. A key distinction is that CML is the result of blood cancer, which typically begins in the bone marrow. However, leukemoid reactions can have several causes, such as infections.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is characterized by the appearance in the blood of large numbers of immature white blood cells of the myelogenous series in the stage following the myeloblast, namely, myelocytes.

Leukaemia is the cancer of blood or bone marrow. Leukemoid reaction is an increase in the number of WBC that mimic leukmia and it is not a sign of malignancy. In the leukemoid reaction, the neutrophils are mature and not clonally derived.

What causes Leukemoid?

The major causes of leukemoid reactions are severe infections, intoxications, malignancies, severe hemorrhage, or acute hemolysis.
