Do Scots support independence?

In the referendum, on 18 September 2014, Scotland voted against independence by 55.3% to 44.7%, with an overall turnout of 84.6%.

Can Scotland make its own laws?

The history of devolution The Scottish Government cannot make laws in reserved areas and there is a convention that the UK Government will seek the consent of the Scottish Parliament when it is passing laws that could impact on devolved areas.

Why do people want Scotland to become independent?

Some statistics suggest Scotland is wealthy & receives less public money to spend than it raises in revenues & would therefore be wealthier if it’s Independent. An Indepedent Scotland would have different values from the UK which are fairer & more progressive. No Tories. (The Deputy First Minister says this every other sentence).

Is Scotland about to become an independent country?

Yes, in September 2014. Scottish voters were given the choice of staying in the UK or becoming an independent country. They backed staying the UK by 55% to 45%. Why is it back in the spotlight now? In one word – Brexit.
