If Seymour Duncan could create an SSL-1 with the output of an SSL-5, I’m sure they would jump at the chance. Technically there is a way to do it, but it requires abandoning the tall vintage Strat bobbin in favor of a shorter coil.

The SSL-1 is a great example of an AlNiCo 5-based classic single coil Strat pickup. It’s one of my standard baselines to compare against. High Q is the distinguishing characteristic. SalvorHardin likes this. It would almost make an ideal baseline calibration pickup. They’ve been a lot more consistent than Fender. They don’t cost much.

A bobbin such as the Bill Lawrence MicroCoil, or a stacked humbucker with the lower coil disconnected, has the potential to achieve SSL-5 output with an SSL-1 resonant peak, because more turns of coil wire are placed closer to the guitar strings.
