How many times a week is the AVID tutorial process?

Tutorials take place twice a week, either on Mondays & Wednesdays, or Tuesdays & Thursdays. The AVID tutorial process is divided into three parts—before the tutorial, during the tutorial, and after the tutorial.

What is Avid learning strategies?

AVID Strategies are research-based best practices in teaching methodology. The focus of these strategies is on promoting rigor through WICOR: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading. These methods increase engagement through student ownership, accountability, and critical thinking.

Why is a TRF important?

Students will move faster and remember more when working together. It teaches them how to work with others which they will likely have to do in college, such as in study groups, and in their career fields in the future.

Why do we use TRF?

Using the Tutorial Request Form (TRF), students complete the pre-work leading to the point of confusion. This pre-work includes: initial question, key vocabulary associated with the question, prior knowledge, critical thinking about the initial questions and the steps/ process used to identify the point of confusion.

What is the 60 second speech in Avid?

Once a student presenter has been identified, they give a 60-Second Speech for the group members that addresses their pre-work inquiry and identified Point of Confusion, along with what they know about the initial question, and any academic vocabulary that is central to the topic.

What are AVID quick writes?

“Quick Writes” and “Reciprocal Teaching Pairs” are strategies that can easily be embedded within a lecture to improve engagement, repetition, and synthesis of information. For quick writes, after 10 minutes of lecture/teacher talk, stop and ask students to write what they learned – keep it short – 1 to 2 minutes.

A quickwrite is a first draft response to a short piece of writing, usually no more than one page of poetry or a short picture book, but differs from prompts and freewrites. Quickwrites allow us to write fast without censoring — it’s what the subconscious allows us to say.

How do quick writes help students?

Quick Writes help students remember, organize, and manage information, and they can be used at any point in a classroom lesson to help them communicate their thoughts, experiences, and reactions to what they are reading and learning.

Do colleges care about AVID?

No. AVID is only for students who want to be in the program and will work harder to be stronger students. Sometimes parents think the program is a good idea for their student; but if the student has no desire to be a part of AVID, it will not help them.
