What is somatic type malignancy?
Abstract. Somatic-type malignancies (STM) may occasionally develop in preexisting germ cell tumors (GCT). It is generally believed to result from transformation of teratomatous elements, although alternative mechanisms must exist, as not all STM develop in teratoma-containing GCT.
Which teratoma is malignant?
A malignant teratoma is a type of cancer consisting of cysts that contain one or more of the three primary embryonic germ layers ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Because malignant teratomas have usually spread by the time of diagnosis, systemic chemotherapy is needed.
What is teratoma with malignant transformation?
Purpose: Teratoma with malignant transformation refers to a form of germ cell tumor in which a somatic teratomatous component becomes morphologically malignant and develops aggressive growth.
What is an immature teratoma?
(IH-muh-CHOOR TAYR-uh-TOH-muh) A type of germ cell tumor that is often made up of several different types of tissue, such as hair, muscle, and bone. Immature teratomas have cells that look very different from normal cells under a microscope. They are usually malignant (cancer) and may spread to other parts of the body.
Is teratoma benign or malignant?
A teratoma is a type of germ cell tumor (a tumor that starts in your reproductive cells). Teratomas can contain many different types of tissue, including bone, muscle, teeth and hair. They may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
Is teratoma malignant or benign?
Mature teratomas are the most common type of ovarian germ cell tumour. They are non cancerous (benign). Mature teratoma is also often called a dermoid cyst. They are most common in women during their reproductive years (from teens to forties).
Does Chemo work on teratoma?
Chemotherapy can be used in the adjuvant setting after resection of transformed teratoma if particularly high-volume cancer was present at the time of resection. In our experience this has been used mainly for embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising in teratoma.
