Are HSH guitars good?

A guitar with an HSH pickup configuration is incredibly versatile. The combination of two thick-sounding humbuckers with a single-coil in between gives you a wide palette of tones, making HSH electric guitars dependable for a raft of styles.

What does HSH mean in guitar?

HSH stands for “humbucker, single coil, humbucker”, its the pickup configuration of the guitar. That’s not the type of pickup, its just what pickups are on there. HH stands for ” humbucker, humbucker” meaning it has two humbuckers on the guitar.

What is better HSS or HSH?

So if you prefer a simpler setup, then the HSS pickup combination is better. If you want an abundance of options and a humbucker in the neck position, then get a guitar with an HSH pickup configuration.

What is the difference between fender HSS and HSH?

With HSH guitars, you have 2 humbucker tones and 3 single-coil tones. With HSS guitars, you get 1 humbucker tone and 4 single-coil tones.

What is an HSH pickup?

In general, an HSH configuration means that you have three pickups on your guitar: a bridge humbucker, a middle single-coil, and a neck humbucker. This configuration was very popular in the so-called “super-strat” era, but is still used today, even if you don’t see it as often.

Who used an HSS Strat?

Kirk Hammett used an HSS Strat at a point, he even has an EMG signature HSS set. Andy Timmons uses HSS Strats. Those and the ones the others mentioned are a few. If you think people don’t like the bridge humbucker tone on a Strat just look at EVH and many of the hair metal bands in the 80’s.

Is a humbucker series or parallel?

The two coils in a humbucker are typically wired in series. This produces the highest output, but also the darkest tone. If a humbucker has a 4-conductor harness, its coils can easily be wired in parallel.

What is a split humbucker?

To split a humbucker is to cut out one coil from the circuit, leaving a single coil to work its magic – just like you’d hear from your standard Strat or Tele. Why would you want to split the coils of your pickup? Humbuckers produce a very different tone to single coils.

What is a fat Stratocaster?

Some people call them HSS Strats. Others call them Fat Strats. Some people don’t care for them, others don’t know what they’d do without them. Either way, you can’t deny the appeal of a guitar that combines the feel and mechanics of a Strat with the chunky kick of a bridge position humbucker.

What does HSH mean on a guitar?

In general, an HSH configuration means that you have three pickups on your guitar: a bridge humbucker, a middle single-coil, and a neck humbucker. This configuration was very popular in the so-called “super-strat” era, but is still used today, even if you don’t see it as often.

Do all HSH guitars have a coil tap?

And all of that is without considering the various coil-tapping options; on some HSH guitars, one or both of the mix positions are sometimes wired with an automatic coil tap, so e.g. neck+middle would be only one coil of the neck pickup mixed with the single-coil middle pickup.

What does the letter H stand for on a guitar?

The letter H stands for Humbucker and the letter S stands for single-coil. What’s also important to know is the order of letters. Going from left to right, it starts with the bridge and ends with the neck position.

What is the difference between H-S-H and H-H setup?

This is what you cannot get with H-H setup. As the H-S-H wiring is usually a variation on Strat wiring, you generally get the middle pickup in middle position, while H-H guitars generally have neck-bridge as the middle position.
