What is a zest tool?
A zester is essentially a tool that allows you to remove the zest from citrus. It also comes in handy for a variety of other uses which makes it multifunctional. In my opinion, there is no better way to remove the zest from citrus fruits while leaving behind the bitter pith.
How is a zester used?
A special kitchen tool that is used to shave bits or strands from the outer most layer of covering on citrus fruits such as lemons, limes or oranges. By adding this layer to raw or cooked foods, the flavor of the food being prepared is enhanced with the oils of the fruit.
What is the difference between a Microplane and a zester?
Grating Nutmeg & Other Spices ( While Microplane makes a separate tool specifically for grating spices, I’ve found that the zester/grater works just fine for spices.) And while it’s a bit tougher than grating nutmeg, you can also grate cinnamon sticks with a Microplane, according to senior digital editor Jaime Milan.
What’s the difference between a zester and a grater?
Zesters are exclusively used for citrus fruits to get long, thin strips of zest. They’re small with just a few round holes that you scrape along the fruit. A grater, on the other hand, is multipurpose. You can zest citrus with a grater, but you can’t necessarily shred veggies with a zester.
What is the difference between lemon peel and lemon zest?
Technically the zest of any citrus fruit is the thin, colored outer layer of the skin. The rind includes the zest and a bit of the bitter white underlayer, whereas the peel is the whole jacket — everything but the flesh. Zest contains the flavorful citrus oils and is the most widely useful of the three.

Do you wash lemons before Zesting?
Always wash and dry the fruit before using the zester. If using non-organic lemons, remove the wax coating first. It’s very easy to do! Simply put the fruit in a colander and pour over water from a recently boiled kettle or rinse the fruit under a hot running tap (if you trust your tap water).
What to do with lemons after Zesting?
Once your lemons are zested and squeezed, you can still use the leftover lemon rind/peels:
- Freshening up the Sink Disposal: throw in 2-4 at a time and run your garbage disposal with the water on until they clear.
- Clean your Microwave: Place 4-5 squeezed lemon peels into a large measuring cup or bowl.
