Is any blue pencil non-photo?

Back in the day, graphic designers and printers used “non-photo blue” pencils. Certain shades of blue that could not be detected by camera film (or copy machines), so rough drawing lines or notations could be left on the art and would not appear in the final form.

What is a blue pencil used for?

A blue pencil is a pencil traditionally used by a copy editor or sub-editor to show corrections to a written copy. The colour is used specifically because it will not show in some lithographic or photographic reproduction processes; these are known as non-photo blue pencils.

Why do artists use blue pencil?

Blue pencils were used by people in the design industry as well as the animation industry because it was a tone that was visible to our eyes on roughs, but when scanned in with corrections, was not visible by the scanner and so would make copies that didn’t have the ‘editing lines’ on it.

Results: The copier used makes a huge difference in the quality of how blue inks photocopy. Big Bertha (Small canon copier) doesn’t do a good job at picking up the blue inks, many of the lighter shades barely show up. With the larger Xerox WorkStation most of the blue inks copied perfectly well.
