MercyMe was exhausted by trying to live up to other people’s expectations. About 10 years after the Christian band charted its multi-platinum song “I Can Only Imagine,” they were on the brink of breaking up. They were tired from constant touring. Singer Bart Millard said their families were “hanging by a thread.”
