How many people have SV40?

Infectious SV40 survived the vaccine inactivation treatments, and conservative estimates indicate that up to 30 million people (children and adults) in the United States may have been exposed to live SV40 from 1955 through 1963 when administered potentially contaminated polio vaccines (95, 111).

How is SV40 transmitted?

Recent molecular biology and epidemiological studies suggest that SV40 may be contagiously transmitted in humans by horizontal infection, independently from the earlier administration of SV40-contaminated vaccines.

What is SV40 origin of replication?

The simian virus 40 (SV40) core origin of replication consists of three functional domains. The sequence 5′-CACTACTTCTGGAATAG-3′ with an imperfect inverted repeat (underlined), a palindrome with four 5′-GAGGC-3′ pentanucleotide repeats, and a 17-base-pair A + T-rich segment.

Does SV40 cause mesothelioma?

In animal testing, 100 percent of those injected with SV40 into the pleural space developed mesothelioma within three to six months. One study found that 60 percent of malignant mesothelioma cases in the U.S. contain SV40. While another study suggests 80 percent of cases contain the virus.

Where is SV40 from?

Polio vaccines used in the late 1950s and early 1960s were contaminated with a virus called simian virus 40 (SV40) present in monkey kidney cells used to grow the vaccine.

What does the SV40 large T antigen do?

The large and small tumor antigens (T antigens) are the major regulatory proteins encoded by SV40. Large T antigen is responsible for both viral and cellular transcriptional regulation, virion assembly, viral DNA replication, and alteration of the cell cycle.

What is the role of SV40 ori?

The SV40 origin can be used to increase the level of transcription in cells that are transfected with the plasmid because the plasmid is replicated. It is also reported that by using selectable markers in conjunction with the SV40 origin stable cell lines can be produced.

What is the ColE1 origin?

ColE1 is a plasmid found in bacteria. Its name derives from the fact that it carries a gene for colicin E1 (the cea gene). It also codes for immunity from this product with the imm gene. In addition, the plasmid has a series of mobility (mob) genes.
