Can you get financial aid after disbursement?
Federal Student Aid does not determine when your aid is disbursed. Once we process your FAFSA, we send that information to your school and they handle the rest. Generally, your grant or loan will cover a full academic year and your school will pay out the money in at least two payments called disbursements.
What do I do with my student refund check?
Hold the money in your account. Holding onto your refund is a good safety net for extra costs, but once the semester is over, give the excess money back to your servicer so you don’t spend it on anything non-school-related (and try to pay any interest that may have accumulated while you were holding onto that money).

It can take anywhere from 2 – 10 weeks for you or your college to receive the funds from the date that your loan application is approved. If you are taking a school-certified loan, the funds are disbursed directly to the school you are enrolled in.

Often, it takes about three weeks for the funds to be disbursed after you’re approved. In other cases, though, receiving your private student loans can take much longer. It’s not uncommon for the disbursement process to take two or three months in slower cases.
When should I expect my school refund?
In most cases, your check will be sent within the first 14 days after the semester begins. This will usually allow enough time to post your financial aid and any supplemental financing that you receive.
What happens to extra financial aid money?
If you have money left over from your Pell Grant, you can ask the school to hold the funds for you, or you can receive the remaining amount as a refund. Pell Grants go toward education expenses, except student loan expenses.
What can I use leftover financial aid money for?
If there is money left over, the school will pay it to you. In some cases, with your permission, the school may give the leftover money to your child. If you take out a loan as a student or parent, your school (or your child’s school) will notify you in writing each time they give you any part of your loan money.
Why disbursement is delayed?
Delayed disbursements are possible because commercial banks typically take longer to process checks which are drawn from banks in remote locations, often up to as many as five business days (instead of the usual three days).
What happens to the leftover Pell Grant money?
If some of your grant dollars are unused, the school will issue you a Pell Grant refund. You may receive a check for the remaining amount, or the school may transfer it via direct deposit into your bank account or student account.
