What is the fore edge of a book?
The fore-edge is the edge of the text block opposite the spine (if you think of a book as having four edges, they are the spine, top edge, bottom edge and fore-edge — this last being the edge you use to thumb through the pages), and fore-edge paintings are artistic decorations meant to enhance a volume’s beauty.
What is it called when the edges of a book are colored?
It’s a purely decorative process called edge painting (or fore-edge painting) because it’s color painted on the fore-edge of the book (go figure). It’s common on religious texts, but that’s only because religious texts simply tend to be better made and better decorated.

What kind of paint do you use on book edges?
The best acrylic paint I’ve found for DIY-ing book edges is Apple Barrel. It spreads nicely and doesn’t leave spots, as you can see on my DIY of Throne of Glass below. I would recommend against Gloss Acrylic, though, as I experimented with that one on this DIY and it didn’t turn out as well as non-Gloss.

- Step 8: Remove the Tape Gently.
Why is it called a deckle?
The name “deckle” comes from a tool called a deckle, which is a wooden frame used in the process of papermaking. With handmade paper, as the wet pulp dries it seeps between the deckle and the mould.
