What is EFI partition in Linux?

The EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) system partition or ESP is a partition on a data storage device (usually a hard disk drive or solid-state drive) that is used by computers having the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).

How big should the EFI partition be Linux?

One very common problem is files that can’t be read by the EFI. The Linux mkdosfs command defaults to using FAT16 for partitions of up to 520MiB (546MB). Therefore, adding a margin of safety to protect against MiB/MB confusion and rounding errors, I recommend creating an ESP that’s at least 550MiB in size.

Is EFI system partition needed?

As we mentioned above, the EFI partition is essential if you want to be able to boot up the operating system that you have installed on your internal hard drive. However, if you have an external hard drive rather than internal one, you do not require an EFI partition to boot from the drive.

Most distributions of Linux use either ext3 or ext4 as their file system nowadays, which has a built-in “self-cleaning” mechanism so you don’t have to defrag. In order for this to work best, though, there should be free space for between 25-35% of the partition.

Is Ubuntu EFI partition necessary?

If you are manually partitioning your disk in the Ubuntu installer, you need to make sure you have an EFI System Partition (ESP) set up. This partition holds EFI-mode boot loaders and related files. If your disk already contains an ESP (eg if your computer had Windows 8 preinstalled), it can be used for Ubuntu too.

Formatting the EFI partition should be safe, as the system should certainly remain usable even if a failing system disk needs to be replaced.

Should EFI partition be primary or logical?

It really doesn’t matter, as UEFI has a very high partition limit and a logical partition is not really required. A logical partition is really a workaround for the legacy BIOS, which only allowed for 4 partitions on one drive.
