Derkeethus is an Argonian found in Darkwater Pass, where he is being held captive by the Falmer. He becomes a follower once he is rescued from Darkwater Pass, and a potential marriage candidate. He can also be recruited to the Blades if the Dragonborn talks to Delphine while he is a follower.

Derkeethus is aliased to his own quest, which is what makes him essential – but the reality is he’s supposed to become mortal once its over. People who have him essential afterwards are experiencing a bug – not vice versa. Something about the scripting is buggy.
Can Derkeethus be a steward?
Apparently, he has spoken lines in-game for Steward dialogue, so if one were to use Console Commands he could have become a steward…But sadly, that is not the case for us Xbox and PS3 users.
