Is Priorat a good wine?

Priorat is a small wine region in Catalonia known for its intensely-flavored red wines. An area with a long history, Priorat’s difficult mountainside location kept the region fairly obscure until just a few decades ago; now, it produces some of the most acclaimed wines in Spain.

Priorat is a small, dynamic wine region in Catalonia, north-eastern Spain, whose intense, full-bodied red wines have shot to fame in the past few decades. The classic Priorat wine is made from old-vine Garnacha and Samso/Cariñena, and has concentrated aromas of licorice, tar and brandied cherries.

What kind of grape is Priorat?

The dominant vineyard plantings in Priorat are Garnacha (aka Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan). These two grape varieties provide the backbone of nearly all Priorat reds, although no minimum or maximum of any variety is required by law.

Is Priorat in Rioja?

Priorat is one of only two Spanish wine regions known as a denominación de origen calificada (DOCa). The other is Rioja, the well-known symbol of premium Spanish wine. Since Priorat is in Catalonia, here it’s called a denominació d’origen qualificada (DOQ), though it means the same thing.

What food goes with Priorat wine?

Rustic dishes that mirror the area’s rugged terrain are perfect pairings for Priorat. Game, roasted vegetables, sausages, and pepper stews stand up to the wine’s tannins. Hearty legume-based vegetarian dishes, such as this Catalan Style Lentil Soup with Picada, hold up well to the wine’s bold aromas and flavors.

Priorat pairs perfectly with Rich Food, Stews, Cassoulets and other Rish Food. Priorat also love Grilled Meat (Beef. Veal. Pork.

What cheese goes with Priorat?

With a red wine from the Priorat, we would suggest a strong “curado” goat or sheep cheese, and a blue cheese, like Valdeón, could also be a good option. Even more so, a fermented cheese such as a Gaztazarra. Wine is not the only drink that can be paired. You can also pair cheese with beer, don’t be shy!

Priorat (pronounced PRE-oh-rot) is my favorite wine region in the world and I’m so excited to write about it.
