What does heating a bearing do?

Heating bearings is a good way to temporarily expand the bearing rings to facilitate mounting without the use of excessive force that could damage bearings. Heaters can be used for mounting or dismounting by efficiently heating bearings and workpieces (gears, sprockets) large and small.

How hot is too hot for a bearing?

A simple rule for troubleshooting bearing temperatures: No more than 180 degrees Fahrenheit (82 degrees Celsius) on the housing. The bearing outer ring can be up to 20°F (11°C) hotter than the housing. The lubricant originally specified for the application was likely selected to run at lower temperatures.

How hot should a bearing get?

Normal motor bearing operating temperatures range from 140° to 160°F. As in all bearing applications, this measurement should be taken at the bearing outer ring. If the outer ring is inaccessible, take the measurement at the housing and add 15° to 20°F to estimate the correct bearing temperature.
