What does Ofsted say about observations?

Ofsted will still want proof that you know your children well, that you have identified their starting points, interests, progress and next steps. You will need to talk about each child’s learning journey with confidence. And if you’re not doing observations, you won’t be able to provide this evidence!

How many lesson observations should a teacher have?

CONDUCTING OBSERVATION There should be a limit of a total of three observations for all purposes. Under no circumstances shall the total time occupied by all observations exceed three hours per year and the focus and timing must be agreed in the teacher’s performance management planning statement.

What is considered when planning a classroom observation?

    Effective lesson observations

    1. Having a focus. Before you watch a lesson, it is always a good idea to have a focus for the observation.
    2. Making notes. Reams and reams of notes aren’t as helpful as you may think.
    3. Think outside the (comments) box.
    4. Feeding back.
    5. Achieving targets.
    6. Further information.

What goes into planning for an observation?

Planning starts with observing children in order to understand and consider their current interests, development and learning. Observation describes the process of watching the children in our care, listening to them and taking note of what we see and hear.

What are the guidelines to be followed for effective observation?

Plan the observation. Request class materials including the case, supplemental readings, teaching note (if available), study questions, and seating chart. Arrange times for a pre-observation meeting and debrief. The debrief should occur while details are still fresh, preferably before the instructor’s next class.
