How efficient are SOFC?

State-of-the-art SOFC systems provide an electrical efficiency of around 60% and a CHP system efficiency up to 85–90% (Gür, 2016). SOFC-GT hybrid system can even achieve electrical efficiencies of as high as 70% (Buonomano et al., 2015).

What is LT Pemfc?

A low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (LT-PEMFC) is a promising clean and effective technology for power generation because of its simplified water and heat management.

What fuel is used in SOFC?

SOFCs can also be fueled by externally reforming heavier hydrocarbons, such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel (JP-8) or biofuels. Such reformates are mixtures of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, steam and methane, formed by reacting the hydrocarbon fuels with air or steam in a device upstream of the SOFC anode.

How does an SOFC work?

SOFC Operating Principles Fuel is delivered to the anode and oxidant, typically air, is delivered to the cathode. The electrodes are solid porous structures that allow the fuel and air to diffuse to the electrolyte and the products of the electrochemical reaction on the anode side to diffuse away from the electrolyte.

What is the range of working temperature of SOFC?

between 550 and 1000 °C
The operational temperature of SOFC membrane ranges between 550 and 1000 °C depending on the electrolyte type and thickness as well as electrodes used.

What is the difference between SOFC and SOEC?

… roles of electrodes change and the SOFC anode (electrode on which oxida- tion of species occurs) becomes the cathode (electrode on which reduction of species occurs) in SOEC mode. The working conditions in the anodic and cathodic compartments change as well.

What is the disadvantage of Pemfc?

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEMFC) The major disadvantage of PEM fuel cells is that they require an expensive catalyst, in this case platinum, which adds to the overall unit cost. Hydrogen delivery is also another significant barrier is it requires careful handling and storage.
