How many people killed in Mullivaikkal?

It is not known precisely how many people lost their lives in the final months of the war. UN estimates suggest that up to 70,000 remain unaccounted for, whilst other credible estimates put that number at almost 147,000.

What happened at Mullivaikkal?

Today, on 18 May, we remember the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians who, whilst trapped on a tiny coastal spit of land, were killed at Mullivaikkal. After being corralled into constantly-shifting ‘No-Fire Zones’, large, concentrated civilian populations were repeatedly shelled by the Sri Lankan armed forces.

Is the LTTE still active?

Victory over the Tigers was declared by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 16 May 2009, and the LTTE admitted defeat on 17 May 2009. Prabhakaran was killed by government forces on 19 May 2009.

How did Sri Lanka eliminate LTTE?

After a 26-year military campaign, the Sri Lankan Armed Forces militarily defeated the Tamil Tigers in May 2009, bringing the civil war to an end. Up to 70,000 people had been killed by 2007. Immediately following the end of the war, on 20 May 2009, the United Nations estimated a total of 80,000–100,000 deaths.

Why did India help Sri Lanka against LTTE?

The Sri Lankan government accused the Indian forces of helping the LTTE as they dropped weapons along with food. Then Indo-Sri Lanka peace accord was also signed and the Sri Lankans provided the Tamilians with their demands and Tamil was recognized as the official status for a language.
