Summary. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a key component of Internet routing and is responsible for exchanging information on how Autonomous Systems (ASes) can reach one another. When BGP issues occur, inter-network traffic can be affected, from packet loss and latency to complete loss of connectivity.

How can I reduce BGP convergence time?

Answer. In order to reduce BGP convergence time you need to increase your Layer 2 and Layer 3 MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) setting to at least 4096 bytes. The reason for this recommendation is because the maximum size a BGP update message can be is 4096 bytes.
