What is NASA STEREO?

Launched in October 2006, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO, has provided scientists a unique and revolutionary view of the Sun-Earth System.

What does SOHO NASA stand for?

Solar & Heliospheric Observatory
Launched in December 1995, the joint NASA-ESA Solar & Heliospheric Observatory mission — SOHO — was designed to study the Sun inside out, from its internal structure, to the extensive outer atmosphere, to the solar wind that it blows across the solar system.

What does SOHO satellite mean?

Solar and Heliospheric Observatory
The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) is a European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft built by a European industrial consortium led by Matra Marconi Space (now Airbus Defence and Space) that was launched on a Lockheed Martin Atlas IIAS launch vehicle on 2 December 1995, to study the Sun.

Where is the stereo a spacecraft?

STEREO currently consists of a space-based observatory, STEREO-A, orbiting the Sun just inside of 1 AU – slowly catching up with Earth as it orbits about the Sun.

Who launched SOHO?

SOHO was launched on December 2, 1995. The SOHO spacecraft was built in Europe by an industry team led by prime contractor Matra Marconi Space (now EADS Astrium) under overall management by ESA. The twelve instruments on board SOHO were provided by European and American scientists.

What happened to stereo A?

STEREO-A continues to operate normally. STEREO’s current mission extension was based on using just one spacecraft, so, regardless of what happens with STEREO-B, the STEREO mission will provide robust solar research in the coming years.

Why are there two STEREO satellites?

Two nearly identical spacecraft were launched in 2006 into orbits around the Sun that cause them to respectively pull farther ahead of and fall gradually behind the Earth….STEREO.

Which mission is best known for giving us an understanding of space weather SOHO stereo or SDO?

A joint ESA/NASA mission, SOHO has helped revolutionize our understanding of the sun’s interior and complex atmosphere — home to a variety of giant explosions, including eruptions of solar material known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

What happened to stereo B?

Communications with Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory-B (STEREO-B) were lost on Oct. 1, 2014, due to multiple hardware anomalies affecting control of the spacecraft orientation.

What has Soho done in space?

Over more than two decades in space, SOHO has made many new discoveries, adding to scientists’ understanding of our closest star. Up-to-date views of the sun from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory.

What is the SOHO mission?

Launched in December 1995, the joint NASA-ESA Solar & Heliospheric Observatory mission — SOHO — was designed to study the Sun inside out, from its internal structure, to the extensive outer atmosphere, to the solar wind that it blows across the solar system.

What is stereo-a?

STEREO currently consists of a space-based observatory, STEREO-A, orbiting the Sun just inside of 1 AU – slowly catching up with Earth as it orbits about the Sun. This viewpoint away from the Earth-Sun line allows scientists to see the structure and evolution of solar storms as they blast from the Sun and move out through space.

How does the stereo map show the Sun?

The movie starts with the view of the Sun as seen from Earth, with the 0 degree meridian line in the middle. The map then rotates through 360 degrees to show the part of the Sun not visible from Earth. A selection of some of our favorite video clips and images as they occur.
