What is the best trap for mink?

Using a 110 or even a 160 conibear trap, also called a body grip trap, is another very effective trap for both mink and muskrat. They’re commonly used to make blind sets or trail sets when bait or lure is not used.

How do you trap an ermine?

To catch a live ermine, you can use a live trap, such as the commonly used “Havahart” traps. These are made out of metal and contain spring-loaded doors on either side that will humanely capture the animal once the trap is triggered.

How do you trap a weasel or mink?

Select and Position Bait Use fresh meat, if possible. Position your bait strategically, so that the weasel must bring its entire body into the trap and step on the trigger plate to get to it. Make sure that the bait is far enough from the trap walls that an animal cannot reach inside and steal it without entering.

Where do you set a weasel trap?

Place boxes on the inside of the livestock area along the wall. You can also set weasel traps up near the roost or beside individual cages in the barn. Make sure the bait pan is set up to work with nothing under it that might interfere.

What size traps for mink?

The #110 conibear is the most popular size conibear used to trap mink, but others will work in the right situation. While there is plenty of variation in sets, mink trapping can be boiled down to two basic set types: the blind set and the pocket set.

How do you trap a mink around a chicken coop?

Minks can often be suspicious of new objects, so live traps can be difficult if not properly placed and baited. Place a two-door trap along typical mink paths, such as along chicken coops or in dirt banks. This method is most effective in travel lanes where they cannot go around the trap and instead must enter it.

What do you bait a mink trap with?

Bloody chicken meat, chicken entrails, frogs, fresh fish and muskrat carcasses are great bait options to ensure minks come to investigate. For an added attractant, sparsely cover your bait with fur or feathers depending on what you’re using.

How do you trap a mink?

Mink Sets

  1. Choose a steep bank. Straight up and down is best.
  2. Starting slightly below water level, dig a small pocket into the bank.
  3. Place bait—a piece of crayfish, fish, muskrat, mouse, or frog—at the back of the pocket.
  4. Add mink lure.
  5. Place a foothold or bodygrip trap of the proper size at the opening to the pocket.

What smell do minks hate?

Weasels Hate Citronella, Eucalyptus and Tea Tree Oils But essential oils can do more than just smell good and relieve stress. They can also repel weasels! The four types of essential oils that can be effective against weasels include one we already mentioned: mint.

Can mink chew through chicken wire?

Close off large openings with metal flashing, since minks are able to claw and chew through soft wood. Place chicken wire with holes no larger than 1 inch over ventilation openings in poultry yards and chicken coops. Seal even the smallest holes and cracks with caulk or expanding foam.

How small of a hole can a mink get into?

Tip: Minks can fit through impossibly small openings and often use paths created by mice and rats to enter coops. Seal any gap larger than 1 inch for best results.
