Can Electric Blue Jack Dempsey?

The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, also known as the EBJD for short, is quite possibly the king of the “blue gene” cichlids! The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciata “Electric Blue”), also known as the Powder Blue Jack Dempsey, is an almost unbelievably bright blue color variant of its species.

How big do Electric Blue Jack Dempseys get?

Just like its parentage, the body of the Electric Blue Jack Dempsey is stocky and compact. However this variety is a little smaller reaching closer to the 8 inches (20 cm) in length, rather than the almost 10 inches (25 cm) of a full size Jack Dempsey fish. They generally have a life span of 10 – 15 years.

How can you tell a male from a female electric blue Dempsey?

Sexing: Jack Dempseys can be sexed the same way as most cichlids – males have the typical long, pointed fins where females have shorter, rounded ones. In addition though, female JDs have a blue spangling on their cheeks, as can be seen from the above photo, where the males just have the underlying body colour.

How long do Electric Blue Jack Dempsey’s live?

The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey lifespan is between 10-15 years, only if the Electric Blue Jack Dempsey baby can survive its early days. This can be difficult in the wild, since their own parent fish can eat them due to lack of food, their small size, and inability to find other food in the wild.

Why do my Jack Dempseys change color?

Health and Color Change If you notice a Jack Dempsey cichlid taking on a lighter overall color scheme, it could be an indication of poor health or anxiety. Perhaps something in his living environment is triggering intense frustration and nerves.
