What is rabbinical training?

The Rabbinical School curriculum is a rigorous academic program that leads you on a five- or six-year journey of acquisition of knowledge and growth. Its thematic and practical approach nourishes your mind and spirit as you prepare to serve in the world as a rabbi.

In the Jewish tradition, one becomes a rabbi after receiving “smicha,” or ordination, from the rabbinical seminaries of the different movements of American Judaism (Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, Orthodox), from an independent rabbinical school, or privately from an individual rabbi.

How many credits do I need to complete a rabbinical program?

Students may take rabbinical program courses online. Depending upon where a student lives, they may take 25% – 90% of their courses on our streaming platform. See here for more details. A total of 140 credits plus 4 trimesters of Fieldwork Support Seminar and 4 trimesters of Core Concepts Seminar are required.

What are the skills needed to become a rabbi?

During their years of study, students will acquire crucial liturgical skills. These include leading the various services of the Jewish year and the appropriate cantillations of various biblical texts. Students entering a rabbinate open to all streams of Jewish life must be proficient in a wide array of these skills.
