What are the requirements for data deduplication?

Optimally, Data Deduplication should have 1 GB of memory for every 1 TB of logical data. For instance, if you are optimizing a 10 TB volume, you would optimally need 10 GB of memory allocated for Data Deduplication ( 1 GB * 10 ). This ratio will ensure the maximum performance for Data Deduplication jobs.

How does Windows Server 2012 deduplication work?

Disk / Data Deduplication is a feature new to Windows in Server 2012 and has recently been improved in Server 2012 R2. Data Deduplication is based on the idea that if you have multiple copies of the same file you can only actually write one to disk and then just provide pointers to the copy.

How many types of deduplication are there?

There are two main methods used to deduplicate redundant data: inline and post-processing deduplication. Your backup environment will dictate which method you use. Inline deduplication analyzes data as it is ingested in a backup system. Redundancies are removed as the data is written to backup storage.

What are different types of deduplication?

Which two job types are performed by the deduplication service?

Jobs. Data Deduplication uses a post-processing strategy to optimize and maintain a volume’s space efficiency. The Optimization job deduplicates by chunking data on a volume per the volume policy settings, (optionally) compressing those chunks, and storing chunks uniquely in the chunk store.

How does Microsoft deduplication work?

When enabled, Data Deduplication optimizes free space on a volume by examining the data on the volume by looking for duplicated portions on the volume. Duplicated portions of the volume’s dataset are stored once and are (optionally) compressed for additional savings.

How does data deduplication work in Windows?

Data Deduplication, often called Dedup for short, is a feature that can help reduce the impact of redundant data on storage costs. When enabled, Data Deduplication optimizes free space on a volume by examining the data on the volume by looking for duplicated portions on the volume.

Why do we need deduplication?

Data deduplication is a process that eliminates excessive copies of data and significantly decreases storage capacity requirements. Deduplication can be run as an inline process as the data is being written into the storage system and/or as a background process to eliminate duplicates after the data is written to disk.

How do you increase deduplication rate?

You can’t increase deduplication ratios If your goal is to achieve the highest possible ratio, then store as many copies of your data as possible (long retention times). Your actual stored capacity on disk will increase as well, but your ratio will soar.

What are the environment requirements for data deduplication?

To take advantage of data deduplication, the environment must meet the following requirements: Server: One computer or virtual machine running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012 with at least one data volume

How do I get Started with Windows Server 2012 R2 disk deduplication?

Getting started with Windows Server 2012 R2 disk deduplication is not hard but it does require a few steps. To make this easy here’s a quick run down. Enable the Data Deduplication Role under File and Storage Services> File and iSCSI Services.

What server does data deduplication apply to?

Applies To: Windows Storage Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012 This document explains how to plan for deploying Data Deduplication. To be safe, backup and restore a deduplicated volume to ensure that your deployment is covering the entire dataset.

Can Windows Server data deduplication be enabled on a Hyper-V File Server?

In general, enabling Windows Server Data Deduplication on data volumes that are directly mounted on a Hyper-V compute server (as opposed to mounted from a shared folder hosted on a separate file server) is not supported. However, there is a useful limited configuration that is supported as an exception.
