What does a planetary gearbox do?

A planetary gearbox is a gearbox with the input shaft and the output shaft aligned. A planetary gearbox is used to transfer the largest torque in the most compact form (known as torque density).

Where can you use a planetary gearbox?

Planetary gear transmission (PGT) is widely used in the automobiles, helicopters and marine applications. PGT is more advanced than counter-shaft drive because of its higher torque-to-weight ratio, compactness and reduced noise.

Do cars use planetary gears?

Vehicles such as the Mercedes-AMG G63 6×6 truck and the Mercedes-Benz Unimog use portal axles. In these applications, an epicyclic (planetary) hub gearbox is used, which allows the half shafts to turn faster than the wheels. This reduces the amount of torque needed to generate the same level of power.

How does reverse gear work?

Reverse gear is usually on a fourth shaft to effect a change in direction. The gears themselves are not fixed to the output shaft, but freewheel. Locking collars, on the other hand, rotate with the output shaft and can shift or slide back and forth to engage one of the gears. That’s why we call it “shifting” gears.

An automatic transmission has multiple planetary gear sets. These components work together to create different gear ratios. Since the gears are in constant mesh, they do not have to be engaged or disengaging to make changes.
