What is the role of clutch in car?

The clutch present in your car is a multi-purpose device. It is needed to stop power transmission to the drive shaft so that you can change gears. It prevents the engine from stalling when you are in gear at slow speeds. Lastly, it also functions as a brake to slow down the car during engine braking.

How do you use a clutch?

Clutch control tips

  1. Find a quiet and flat practise area.
  2. Release the hand brake.
  3. Depress the clutch all the way down and put the car into first gear.
  4. Give the accelerator a gentle nudge.
  5. Slowly raise the clutch until the car starts to move forward.

When should you press the clutch?

Fully press the clutch when stopping. If you’re driving faster than approximately 10mph, brake to slow down and then press the clutch about 2 car lengths before stopping to prevent stalling. Always remember that any time you need to drive slower than about 5mph then you need to press the clutch or the car will stall.

Do you use clutch when turning?

Ideally you complete the downshift before turn in. This requires matching the engine revs before… engaging the lower gear. You never want to ride the clutch through a turn, and you should complete most of your braking before turn in and simply be “trail braking” almost to the apex.

Can you use clutch when driving?

Driving slowly. If you’re driving slowly below 10mph and want to stop then press the clutch before the brake so that the car doesn’t stall. You’re more likely to stall or have a shaky stop if you’re driving slowly below 10mph and press the brake first then clutch.

This pushes the pressure pad against the clutch plate but doesn’t engage completely, therefore creating more friction and wearing out the clutch faster.
