What is a null cable modem?

A null modem is a specially designed cable that allows a “head-to-head” connection between two nearby serial devices (computers) through their communication ports (RS-232).

What is a null modem connection Mcq?

No data transmission. No MAX232. The RxD of one is the TxD for the other. No serial communication.

How do you make a null cable?

How To Make a Null Modem Cable

  1. Verify that you need a null modem cable.
  2. Determine what kind of plugs you will need.
  3. Purchase some multi-conductor cable with at least seven conductors, and the appropriate female DB9 and/or DB25 connectors.
  4. Refer to the table below for pin assignments.

What is a DCE connection?

Data communications equipment (DCE) refers to computer hardware devices used to establish, maintain and terminate communication network sessions between a data source and its destination. DCE is connected to the data terminal equipment (DTE) and data transmission circuit (DTC) to convert transmission signals.

Is a router a DCE?

The router is the DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) and the external device is the DCE (Data Communications Equipment), where the DCE provides the clocking.

What is a null modem often used for?

Typically, null-modem cables utilize RS-232 communications ports for transmission and receipt. Use of these cables may require handshake authentication. Null-modem cables are often used for localized gaming, where two computers are in proximity, or for linking a specific computer to a greater hardware system.

Should I use null modem or straight through serial cables?

The null modem cable (crossover cable) should be used when interfacing between a serial port and a DTE device. With null modem cables, the transmitting device’s Transmit (TX) signal is routed to the receiving device’s Receive (RX) line. Similarly, the receiving device’s transmission line is routed to the communicating device’s receiving line.

What is the difference between null modem and RS232 cables?

Higher transmission speed of serial data, limited only by computer performance and network speed

  • Virtual connections over local network or Internet, mitigating cable length restrictions
  • Virtually unlimited number of virtual connections
  • No need for a serial cable
  • The computer’s physical serial ports remain free
  • Do I have a bad cable modem?

When a cable modem is bad, check all cables when you’re diagnosing a modem. Replacing any cord is far better than having to get an entirely new modem. If the cables are not the problem, maybe the cable modem is bad or part of the problem. Another area you’ll want to check is the device itself.
