What is TwinCAT and EtherCAT?

When it comes to Ethernet, the TwinCAT implementation enables different Ethernet protocols to be run with full real-time capability. As an open, Ethernet-based communication system, EtherCAT is designed for a wide range of applications across the automation spectrum.

What is EtherCAT cycle time?

EtherCAT® communication is based on a cyclic execution of tasks starting from the EtherCAT host with a constant Eth- erCAT telegram repeat rate. The constant repeat rate is known as the cycle time. For majority of the applications, a cycle time longer than 500 µs is sufficient.

What is PDI in EtherCAT?

PDI (Process Data Interface) is the internal interface between the ESC and local processors in the EtherCAT slave, for example. The PDI watchdog can be used to monitor this communication for failure. The PDI watchdog monitors correct and timely process data communication with the ESC from the application side.

What is Ethernet over EtherCAT?

”The communication protocol “Ethernet over EtherCAT” (EoE) is used to transfer process data as well as standard Ethernet communication. EoE is used, for example, to access the web server of an EtherCAT slave from an engineering PC. The Ethernet communication is tunneled through EtherCAT.

How does TwinCAT work?

On the software side, the TwinCAT (The Windows Control and Automation Technology) automation suite forms the core of the control system. The TwinCAT software system turns almost any PC-based system into a real-time control with multiple PLC, NC, CNC and/or robotics runtime systems.

What is an EtherCAT node?

EtherCAT enables cable redundancy with simple measures. By connecting a cable from the last node to an additional Ethernet port in the master device, a line topology is extended into a ring topology. A redundancy case, such as a cable break or a node malfunction, is detected by a software add-on in the master stack.

What is a Beckhoff controller?

Beckhoff Automation is a provider of advanced and open automation solutions based upon proven technologies for customers to implement high-performance control systems faster and at a lower overall cost than traditional PLC and motion control systems.

How do I connect to TwinCAT PLC?

How to Connect to Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 PLCs

  1. Download and install Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 programming environment.
  2. Once the programming environment is installed, this icon will appear in the system tray.
  3. Select > Router > Edit Routes.
  4. In the TwinCAT Static Routes window that pops up, select Add…

How does EtherCAT work?

During startup, the master device configures and maps the process data on the slave devices. Different amounts of data can be exchanged with each slave, from one bit to a few bytes, or even up to kilobytes of data. The EtherCAT frame contains one or more datagrams.

What is the data representation of an EtherCAT message?

EtherCAT uses a very simple data representation, sort of like Modbus. There is a data space, a huge data space, and each device is allocated a part of that data space. As messages are transmitted through the network, they map their portion of the data space to the data in the Ethernet message.

The term Ethernet is also frequently associated with data transfer in IT applications, which are based on a TCP/IP connection. Using the Ethernet over EtherCAT (EoE) protocol any Ethernet data traffic can be transported within an EtherCAT segment.

Can the outputs of the EtherCAT module be switched on/off?

If this is prevented by deactivation of the watchdog monitoring in the module, the outputs can be switched or set also in the SAFEOP state. Before the EtherCAT master switches the EtherCAT slave from Safe-Op to Op it must transfer valid output data.
