What is the point of an ossuary?

An ossuary is a chest, box, building, well, or site made to serve as the final resting place of human skeletal remains. They are frequently used where burial space is scarce.

Where are ossuaries located?

Although most of the ossuaries from the Second Temple period so far discovered are from Jerusalem, several groups of ossuaries were also found in greater Judea, Jericho (including six ossuaries discovered north and northwest of Tell Jericho), Samaria, Galilee, and the Jezreel valley.

Is a coffin an ossuary?

The second coffin called ossuaries were reserved for common people. An ossuary is a small coffin in which the bones of the dead were inside – that means that after a person died, their body was buried in a burial cave and after a certain period of time the bones were removed and placed in an ossuary.

Why do they exhume bodies?

Investigators usually exhume a body to perform examinations or tests that it didn’t receive before burial. This could be because the original investigators didn’t think such examinations or tests were necessary, because there weren’t sufficient resources to perform them or because the right technology didn’t exist yet.

On March 14, 2012, Golan was acquitted of the forgery charges but convicted of illegal trading in antiquities. The judge said this acquittal “does not mean that the inscription on the ossuary is authentic or that it was written 2,000 years ago”. The ossuary was returned to Golan, who put it on public display.

The tomb is at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. It is the most widely accepted burial site of Christ. People previously thought the tomb had been no more than 1,000 years old.
