How do you design a subwoofer?

Planning your subwoofer box design

  1. Determine the minimum depth of your box.
  2. Determine the minimum height and width of your box.
  3. Determine the available space in your vehicle.
  4. Sketch out your box.
  5. Determine the internal dimensions and volume of your box.
  6. Calculate the internal box volume in cubic inches.

How many layers of fiberglass do I need for a sub box?

I recommend that you do 2 layers, and crisscross them to ensure you don’t get resin seeping through. Resin will not come off of metal, clothes, carpet, or your dog, so be careful. Extend the tape layer a few (3-4) inches past where your box will go, and also glass out a few inches past that (but within the tapes area).

What is a good frequency to tune sub box?

The manual for my subs (linked above) suggests a box that has a tuning (Fb) of 36hz. So my installer friend says 40hz, manual says 36hz (based off the box they suggest you build), i’ve also been told 32hz is a good number.

Is fiberglass mat or cloth stronger?

Fiberglass mat has a higher density than fiberglass cloth. Fiberglass cloth is a layer of woven strands. It is strong, with a uniform appearance, and is used where the look of a project is important. The woven fibers do not intermesh with the fibers of other layers of fiberglass cloth.
