Is more focus points better?
Well, an increased number of focus points makes it easier to track and maintain focus on a moving subject. This is particular useful for us as nature photographers, as action photography is something we engage in often. You can’t necessarily see all the AF points when you look through the viewfinder.
What is the difference between spot AF and 1 point AF?
For example, when focusing on a subject’s face, Spot AF might only see an area of cheek and relatively solid skin, while the regular Single Point AF is looking at a larger area and might pick up the nose or eye and thus be able to focus.
Does number of AF points matter?
As it turns out, the number of autofocus points you need is probably less than you’d think. In reality, you only need one autofocus point for your camera to get focus. However, having more autofocus points across your frame makes it easier for you and your camera to focus on a subject.
When would you use a single point focus?
Well, for anything stationary or slow moving (like an animal slowly foraging around an area), you should be using single-point AF. This allows you to ensure the focus is on the eyes of your subject, thanks to the accuracy of using just one point.
How do I select the AF point of my camera?
The AF point selection will change in the direction you tilt < >. If you press < > straight down, the center AF point (or center zone) will be selected. You can also select a horizontal AF point by turning the [ ] dial and select a vertical AF point by turning the [ ] dial.
Is the Canon 5D Mark III good for beginners?
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III has a very sophisticated AF System, with a vast number of options to setup its AF behavior, which is capable of some really stunning results. The possible combinations to tweak the AF properties are basically unlimited, so especially for beginners it can be hard to assess which configuration will yield the best results.
How to get the best AF performance with the 5D Mark III?
To reach maximum AF performance with the 5D Mark III some requirements have to be met. First and foremost a sufficient level of light has to be present, the air should be clear and free of heat haze (those are especially problems at airshows) and your subject should have a good distance to the background.
What is the difference between the 1Dx and 5D Mark III?
The 1DX and 5D Mark III basically have the same AF-system so this article should be equally valid for both cameras. However I never used a 1DX so it is possible that this camera will react a bit different than I’m describing in this article.
