Functionally, the Ghillie Kettle and Kelly Kettle operate in the same manner. The biggest difference is that the Ghillie Kettle only comes in aluminum, whereas the Kelly Kettle is available in both stainless steel and aluminum. However, Kelly Kettles only include a stainless steel firebase.
Why is it called a Kelly Kettle?
The first kettle dates back to the 1890’s to a small farm on the shores of Lough Conn, County Mayo, Ireland, when a young Patrick Kelly (Great grand-father of the current Co. Directors), a small farmer and fisherman, developed his first kettle from Tin after a cold winter of tinkering and experimenting in a shed.
How do you get Kelly Kettle?
Fill the fire-base with combustible material such as twigs, bark, dry grass, newspaper, etc. Then gently place the kettle on the fire-base. Light the fire through the hole(s) in side of the fire-base and face the hole into the wind for extra draft. Insert additional fuel through the chimney (keep the twigs, etc small).
Can you use a Kelly Kettle inside?
If you use your Kettle without water in the chamber or allow it to boil dry, then you run the risk of overheating the inner chimney wall and melting the chimney (aluminium models) or causing one of the weld joints to pop open (steel models).
