Which is better pin lock or ball lock kegs?

Since standard Ball Lock and Pin Lock Lids are interchangeable. A good upgrade for Pin Lock kegs is to replace Pin Lock style lids with Ball Lock Style Lids. Ball Lock style lids are, in my opinion, superior because the manual PRV allows you to easily vent your keg as needed.

How does a pin lock keg work?

The spring tension between the poppet of the keg valve and the poppet of the ball lock are balanced so that when they are opposed or connected they open so that liquid or gas can flow and when released, the springs force the valves to close.

What is a Firestone keg?

Firestone kegs are also called pin locks – although since ball locks are more popular some companies are replacing the posts with ball lock posts. Other differences – Corny kegs have a pressure relief valve in the lid. On pin lock you must press the gas valve.

Ball lock kegs are a little leaner, but a little taller where pin locks are a little shorter, but a little wider. Ball lock keg connections use a ring of ball bearings to secure connections to keg posts while pin lock connections use a “tongue and groove” type set up to secure connections.

Really, there is no benefit between one or the other exception being space. If you have pin lock kegs and a short space, you may benefit from using those pin locks. Pin locks are shorter and fatter. For me, I went ball lock so I could have more kegs in a smaller space.

The difference is in manual PRV functionality. Ball Lock Keg lids have a pull ring that allows you to manually vent the keg as you’d like. You may want to do that for the purpose of removing the keg lid or to vent excess pressure in an attempt to get down to a lower pressure.
