How does a Sea Doo carbon ring work?

A Sea-Doo carbon ring (known as a carbon seal as well) is a part of a seal that is designed to keep the water outside the hull. The key to a PWC is a small pump with a rotating part called an impeller. When you crank the throttle, the pump sucks in water through a grate underneath the craft and the impeller blasts it out of a hole at the back, so the force of the jet pushing backward (action) drives the whole craft forward (reaction).

How do I remove the PTO boot?

You will replace it with a metal C-clip. If you have the clip… it will just pop off. Once you get that off, remove the clamp holding the PTO boot onto the drive shaft. If it has the factory Oketer clamp… cut it. At this point… remove the pump, and the drive shaft will slide out.

How do you remove the floating ring from the drive shaft?

The floating ring has 2 O-rings in it to seal it to the drive shaft. They get hard, and makes the floating ring hard to move. I had to spray a little penetrating oil in behind it, and use a couple tire spoons as levers to get the one on my boat to pop loose.
